The Sorting Process

The Ultimate Sorter Model 4 uses a system of interchangeable sorting trays to separate cases primarily by diameter.

The process starts with the "Standard" sorting tray. Cases are scooped into the perforated hopper. Most rimfire, 25ACP, dust and small debris will fall through into the trash bag/bin. The cases then flow down to the sorting tray by vibration. Bin 1 collects 9MM and smaller diameter cases. Bin 2 collects 38SPL/357Mag and 40S&W and other similar diameter cases. Bin 3 collects all larger cases.

Continuously feed the hopper at a rate that provides a steady throughput. It's best to rake the cases around the hopper to allow most of the 22s and debris to fall through.

After the standard sort:

-- Change to the 380/9MM sorting tray and process the output of standard sort Bin 1. The first 2 bins collect 380, 223/5.56 and other smaller cases. Bin 3 collects 9MM.

-- Change to the 38/40 sorting tray and process the output of standard sort Bin 2. This tray will separate the rimmed cases from the rimless. Bin 1 is not used. Bin 2 will contain 38SPL and 357Mag and Bin 3 will contain 40S&W.

-- Change to the 44/45 sorting tray and process the output of standard sort Bin 3. Bin 1 will contain 45ACP. Bin 2 will contain 44 Mag, 44 Spl and 45 Long Colt and Bin 3 all of the larger cases.

Calibers not specified will sort with other cases of the same diameter.

Suggestions/Comments:

-- Running a batch through a tray once generally attains a sort accuracy better than 99%. With the large volume being processed, this can still allow a fair amount of smaller cases to flow to the wrong bin. After completing the standard sort, run Bin 3 through a second pass with the Standard tray. Next run Bin 2 through a second pass.

-- Keep a few small boxes near the hopper. Large rifle cases, shotgun wads and cases, and other large trash should be plucked from the hopper.

-- Nesting is unavoidable, but a second sort will vibrate some nested cases apart. The suggested raking of cases in the hopper will minimize the number of 22s that nest inside larger cases.

-- Experience will dictate the proper feeding and flow. Different combinations of cases might require small adjustments to provide the most effective sorting.
